Electric car

The car charges. The battery stays full.

A car is the biggest load your battery cannot see coming. Seven kilowatts at one in the afternoon, on a cheap smart-charging slot, and the battery empties itself into the car. You buy that power back at the day rate that evening. Suntide stops it.

The day, with the car in it demo data
12:58 Your supplier has planned a charging slot, 13:00 to 14:30. The battery will hold and charge through it, then go back to your own schedule.
14:31 The car took 9.8 kWh over the slot. The battery kept 4.1 kWh from draining into it, worth £0.84 at your day rate. Kept, not earned.
18:24 The car is plugged in since 18:20 and waiting for its slot. Usually done by 06:40.

Three ways it protects the battery

Your supplier's slots, protected

On Intelligent Octopus Go, E.ON Next Drive or EDF smart charging, the supplier plans when the car charges. Suntide reads those slots from your account. The battery charges through each one at the same cheap rate, then goes back to your own schedule.

The battery guard

One switch, for any car home. On the cheap rate the battery charges or rests while the car charges. At any other time, if the car starts drawing while the battery is carrying the house, the battery is held until the car stops.

The drain, priced

If you have linked nothing yet, the health check still spots the pattern in your readings. It tells you what the car cost the battery last week, in pounds, and what to do about it.

The facts

  • Suntide does not control your charger. It acts on the battery and leaves the car to your charger and your supplier.
  • The battery guard is off until you switch it on. You choose how it holds: cover the house only, or charge along with the car.
  • Slot protection needs your supplier account linked, with the car or charger on it.
  • Holding the battery needs an inverter that accepts changes from Suntide. See what yours allows, and which chargers Suntide reads.
  • What the battery kept is reported as kept, never as earned. It stopped losing money. It did not make any.
  • Every hold is put back when the car stops, and logged. One pause switch stops all of it.

Questions

Why does my home battery drain into my electric car?

A car charger is a load like any other, and a big one. When the car starts charging, the battery sees the house drawing power and empties itself to cover it. If the car is on a cheap smart-charging slot in the daytime, the battery gives away power you later buy back at the day rate.

Does Suntide control my car charger?

No. Suntide reads the charger and the charging slots your supplier plans. It acts on the battery, not the car. Your charger and your supplier stay in charge of the car.

Is the battery guard on by default?

No. Nobody is switched on automatically. You switch it on, you choose how it holds, and you can switch it off at any time.
