Fox ESS charge times, planned around your tariff

Fox ESS inverters hold two charge periods and do what they are told. The question is what to tell them, tonight, on your tariff. Suntide reads your system through Fox's own cloud, prices tomorrow half hour by half hour, and draws the plan. You apply it with one tap, and Suntide reads it back from the inverter. Fox ESS support is in beta: it is running on real homes, and newer than Solis.

Getting your Fox ESS API key

Fox gives every account holder a key on request. It takes a few minutes and needs no approval. Suntide asks for the key, never your password.

  1. Sign in at foxesscloud.com in a browser, with the email and password you use in the Fox ESS Cloud app.
  2. Open your personal centre. Top right, click your name, then User Profile.
  3. Go to API Management. Fox now sends you on to the FoxCloud OpenPlatform. Sign in there with the same account.
  4. Generate the key and copy it straight away. Fox shows it once. If you lose it, generate a new one.
  5. Paste it into Suntide. It is encrypted with a dedicated key and never shown again.

The key covers every inverter on your account and can be revoked from the same page. Fox allows 1,440 calls a day per inverter; Suntide uses about 600. If your installer set the system up under their own account, ask them to transfer the plant to yours first.

Fox ESS on a time-of-use tariff

On Octopus Agile the cheap half hours move every day. On Flux, Go, Cosy and Intelligent Octopus Go they are fixed, and the question is how much to charge and when to stop. Suntide works that out from your prices, the solar forecast for your roof and how your house draws power. It shows the plan before anything changes. What it may change on a Fox ESS inverter is the charge and discharge schedule and the charge current, and during a grid event a setting that holds the battery's charge, always put back to the value it found.
